ISPM 15 is the abbreviation for "International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15." This is a standard developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), an international agreement that aims to protect plants and plant products from pests and diseases, thereby preventing their spread across national borders.
ISPM 15 specifically regulates regulations for wood packaging materials used in international trade. The standard requires that wooden packaging materials, such as pallets and crates, undergo certain treatment methods to remove pests and diseases that may be present in the wood. The most common processing method is heat treatment or fumigation with methyl bromide.
Once wooden packaging materials have been processed in accordance with ISPM 15 standards, they will be marked with an internationally recognized stamp or mark, indicating compliance with the regulations. This helps facilitate the movement of goods across borders while reducing the risk of the introduction and spread of dangerous pests and diseases.
